Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009)
We had seen previews for the new animated film Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs last September, and had been interested in seeing if the film could live up to the interest garnered from those, but decided to wait for the DVD to find out for sure. This week, we received the film in the mail, thanks to our Blockbuster subscription, and were happy to give it a chance. Since we hadn't read the children's book by Judi Barrett since we were kids, we weren't quite sure what to expect, but hoped the hilarious previews were a good example of ...
Gamer (2009)
Fall 2009 was quite the busy time for Mr. Gerard Butler. Not only did he star opposite Jamie Foxx in the vengeance flick , he also starred in the ultra-violent tech-savvy Gamer - at least that's the way the two films appeared in their previews. Now that it's been a couple of months since the films were in theaters, both are coming to DVD within weeks of each other. First up: Gamer. Would the film be worth seeing, or would it make me weary enough of Butler I won't want to press my luck again when lands ...
From Paris With Love (2010)
At first glance, the upcoming film From Paris With Love seems like just another buddy-cop action flick. Taking a closer look, however, reveals there's a bit more to this film than first meets the eye. First off, there's John Travolta. Sporting a chrome-dome look made famous by Bruce Willis, Travolta seems almost to be following in Willis' footsteps. With the film's plot sounding a bit like the foreign version of , the role seems better suited for Bruce than it does for Travolta (doesn't "wise-cracking, fast-shooting agent" sound a bit like there should be a "Yippie-kay-ye" in there?). ...
Zombieland (2009)
At first glance, it seems like the upcoming horror/comedy Zombieland is nothing more than a obvious rip-off of . While was hilarious, do we really need a duplicate? Part of the fun of was the fresh new faces giving us outstanding performances (particularly Simon Pegg). Zombieland, on the other hand, is giving us Woody Harrelson - you know, the guy whose last comedic roles were almost too painful to watch (Money Train, Kingpin). In fact, they were so unfunny they reminded us of most any of Will Ferrell's movies - yes, they were that bad. ...
RoboCop (1987)
For Christmas, I was lucky enough to receive an Amazon gift certificate. Having noticed recently that Amazon now provides "previously-owned" DVDs for cheap, I snatched up a couple I had been wanting for awhile - among them RoboCop: The Criterion Collection Edition. But, now that I owned the film I'd been wanting for so long, would it be as good as I remembered from back in the 80's, or has time done something that no criminal was able to - beat RoboCop? Peter Weller stars as Murphy/RoboCop, and his deep voice takes some getting used to. It's almost ...
