    • Plot: Plauged by merciless dreams and a tortured ghost that haunts her waking hours, Casey (Yustman) seeks help from a spiritual advisor (Oldman), who helps her uncover a family curse – a creature with the ability to inhabit anyone or anything. Casey’s only chance of survival is to shut a doorway from beyond that has been opened by someone who was never born.

Yesterday, I said that upcoming film The Uninvited (2009) was going to be the big horror movie of January – and today, I saw a trailer for The Unborn.

While Elizabeth Banks as an evil stepmother sounds like fun, The Unborn brings out the big guns – Gary Oldman, to be specific. Oldman has always seems to gravitate towards characters that are a bit crazy (see The Professional, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Fifth Element, etc.) – even his turn in the Harry Potter series allowed him to get a bit crazy for awhile.

With this lunacy already built into many of his characters, he’s become a old hand at playing demented – so seeing him in an actual horror movie should be well worth it. The only problem – he may steal the show completely away from relative unknown lead female, Odette Yustman.

That’s just the start of this frightfest’s cast, which also includes Cam Gigandet (Never Back Down (2008)), Meagan Good (Transformers (2007)), James Remar (Desperate Housewives), Idris Elba (Reaping (2007)) and Carla Gugino (Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003)).

David S. Goyer directs the frightfest – and again, that should be a positive as well. After his creepy thriller Invisible (2007) (with then relative unknown Justin Chatwin) has shown he’s good at creepy with an acting newcomer – so allowing him to unleash the full horror vibe should be just as entertaining.

By the looks of the trailer, The Unborn‘s visual imagery alone should be enough to send chills up the spine – just imagine a whole film!

Sorry, Elizabeth, but suddenly your The Uninvited (2009) is no longer the tops in a horror-filled January – The Unborn looks to have that spot nailed.
