Just when you thought Wesley Snipes was going to be in the straight-to-DVD section forever, he suddenly pops up in a star-studded hard-hitter called Brooklyn’s Finest, heading to theaters this March.
Wesley’s not alone on this one either. Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Replacement Killers (1998)), the film also stars Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke and Don Cheadle.
While Ethan Hawke has never really been a site favorite, he does manage decent moments every once in awhile. Richard Gere is on again/off again depending on the film, so we’re hoping he’s on for this one. And as for Don Cheadle – well, he’s always a solid performer, so we aren’t worried about him at all.
So will these totally different actors be able to work well together on-screen? We know Cheadle is good at ensemble pics (Crash (2005)), and Gere’s had experience too (Chicago (2002)), and it seems that Snipes’ is reliving his classic Nino Brown character from New Jack City, so we’ve got high hopes Hawke will be able to get his act together and make this one a solid quartet.
With Antoine Fuqua behind the camera, the odds improve considerably, but he has had a few slight misfires amongst his success (King Arthur, Shooter (2007)), so he won’t necessarily be able to bring this off all by himself.
I’m thinking this one is going to live up to the sum of it’s parts, and turn out to be worthy of the title Brooklyn’s Finest. After all, it seems to be impressing someone already, since it’s been picked up for a theatrical run after it’s 2009 Sundance Film Festival premiere.
Let’s hope it does well in theaters – for Wesley’s sake, if nothing else.
