You know, there are some stars out there that I just can’t figure out why they are so popular. Sacha Baron Cohen is such a star. While he did do a decent turn in the quirky Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street (2007) recently, Borat was just downright awful. I never thought I’d come across a film that would make the “South Park” gang look like high society intellectuals, but Borat proved me all sorts of wrong.
Now Sacha Baron Cohen is back with Bruno, and I’m already groaning. Apparently taking a cue from ex-”SNL”-ers, Cohen is now bringing his bit characters from his popular (and now defunct) “Da Ali G Show” and giving them their own feature-length films. Great – after all, look how well that worked for such bit players as the Coneheads, among others.
Apparently, Bruno is fake reporter for an Austrian TV station and turns every conversation to homosexuality eventually. While this may be good enough to produce a few cheap laughs as some interviewees get a bit uncomfortable, can this really be stretched out into it’s own film?
Ugh. Once again, it looks like Sacha Baron Cohen is making Will Ferrell look like an intellectual with Bruno. Unless the trailer is hilarious, there is no way I’m wasting my money on this – even on DVD.
