That's my first thought without looking at the code. As for not displaying the category in the main area, you can use <code><?php if (is_home()) { query_posts("cat=-761"); } ?></code>. You will have to tweak different areas of the site to totally exclude the category except in the sidebar (including next/previous links, category and search pages) - the code above is just for preventing the posts in that category from displaying on the home page.
