Plot: Tommy (Allen) is fresh out of prison and ready for a second chance in life. Tommy moves in with his sister Viki (Weaver) and her family…and when it comes to explaining to Grandma Tommy’s whereabouts for the last three years, the truth-challenged Viki has the answer: “He’s been in France!” With Grandma now speaking only French to Tommy and sporting a beret, Tommy is determined to flee Viki’s house and complete the two missions closest to his heart: One, to revive his late father’s business and two, to re-connect with his old flame Christy (Bowen).

Usually I’m not a big fan of “family comedies”, since they usually tend to range toward the stupid and/or inane, with a few heart-tugging moments that are almost laughable in their overtness. But when I saw a preview for Tim Allen’s new movie, Crazy on the Outside, I was surprised that I actually thought about checking it out.

Tim Allen has shown he can be funny before in “family comedies” (ie…Santa Clause (1994)), but he’s also shown time and again he doesn’t always pick winners (Jungle 2 Jungle and lots of other forgettable films). Would directing himself be able to bring out the best in him, or is he only able to produce solid performances when used correctly by a more experienced director? I don’t know, but the preview at least gives me hope.

He’s got an exceptional cast backing him up in Crazy on the Outside. Finally graduating from having a child actor as his co-star, he’s gathered top name actors like Sigourney Weaver and Ray Liotta to back him up this time around. Will he be able to shine now that he’s hanging out with people his own age, or is his comedy only good for the younger crowd?

With questions like those lurking in my head, I’ll probably give Crazy on the Outside a pass in theaters – but if I hear good things to back up the comical trailer, chances are good I’ll check this one out when it hits DVD – something I haven’t done with a live-action Tim Allen film since Santa Clause 2 (2002).
