Vampires are quite the “in” thing these days, aren’t they? What with “True Blood” on TV, the film series (and books) the recent Underworld (2003) and so many others, it seems like vampires are everywhere. And, judging by the trailer for Daybreakers, there’s going to be more of them in January 2010.
Is it just a coincidence that (most) vampire movies are so stylized? Maybe it’s just an aura of cool that’s become associated with them, causing lots of talented people to navigate towards that material. While was an exception, even the book series it stems from gets much more stylized by the time Breaking Dawn rolls around. And, if the trailer is any indication, Daybreakers looks to have a lot of style to it as well.
The plot sounds intriguing, as it approaches the whole vampire myth from a whole different angle. Instead of the humans fighting against them to stay alive, with Daybreakers, the vampires are firmly in control. Instead of dissension, they instead have run into a bigger problem – there are so few humans left, their source of blood is running low. How’s that for a twist!
Ethan Hawke has shown he can act on occassion, so hopefully this one will be another of his “good” moments. With such an intriguing plot, the biggest thing that worries me about the film is the release date. Why January? Isn’t that when movies come out that nobody cares about – a sort of movie graveyard, if you will? Why would they release a movie then that seems like they’ve spent more time on it? Are they expecting it to fail?
Guess I’ll have to wait until January (or beyond) to find out if Daybreakers can live up to it’s trailer.
