District 9 (2009)

Another sci-fi flick is headed our way this August, this one title District 9. Since it’s being produced by Peter Jackson (The Lord Of The Rings) and directed by Neil Blomkamp (the man supposedly trying to get a Halo movie off the ground), it’s bound to garner a lot of interest from sci-fi folks (and XBox gamers).

Is the movie being used just to showcase that a Halo movie would be worth making, or is District 9 more than just a throwaway film? That’s the big question floating about these days.

While we hoped we’d get a bit of an answer with the trailer – supposed to be released with Crank: High Voltage (2009), we were disappointed, as the studio pulled the trailer at the last minute.

While I may not be as interested in a Halo movie, I’m still curious to see if the recent viral marketing campaign for District 9 has been worth it. Is there something beneath the hype, or are we looking at another Doomsday (2008), just with aliens and not freaks this time?

Since humans and aliens are supposed to be occupying the same planet, whether or not the filmmakers are able to create realistic alien costumes is a huge part of this film. After all, no one wants another cheesy Planet of the Apes-style makeup effect, do they?

While this one has got my curiosity aroused, I think I’ll hold out for the trailer before making up my mind on whether to see this one in theaters, or on DVD in the comfort of my own home.
