After sitting on his laurels and basking in all of the cash Passion Of The Christ (2004) netted him – not to mention laying low while his anti-semitic remarks created a huge backlash – Mel Gibson is returning to acting with the upcoming film Edge of Darkness.
Based on a 1986 television mini-series, Edge of Darkness has Mel playing the lead as a cop attempting to uncover his daughter’s killer – which turns out to be all wrapped up in a government cover-up of some illegal plutonium.
With a plot like that, this one sounds like it could be really good. But is Mel the man for the job? With some anti-Mel sentiments still raging, is he a hindrance to the film or not? Will moviegoers be able to separate Mel the actor from Mel the guy, or will this just renew the bad publicity for Mel?
Plus, is he still able to play the action guy of his earlier years, or will we see another Firewall (2006)-like foolish attempt at a past-their-action-prime star trying to recapture his glory days?
Guess we’ll find out in 2010.
