At first glance, the upcoming film From Paris With Love seems like just another buddy-cop action flick. Taking a closer look, however, reveals there’s a bit more to this film than first meets the eye.
First off, there’s John Travolta. Sporting a chrome-dome look made famous by Bruce Willis, Travolta seems almost to be following in Willis’ footsteps. With the film’s plot sounding a bit like the foreign version of Die Hard (1988), the role seems better suited for Bruce than it does for Travolta (doesn’t “wise-cracking, fast-shooting agent” sound a bit like there should be a “Yippie-kay-ye” in there?). With Bruce busy facing off against high-tech crime in his upcoming Surrogates (2009), however, that leaves the door wide open for Travolta to jump in to Bruce’s old bread-and-butter roles.
Teaming him with an inexperienced partner, of course, sounds more like this one’s going to be just another buddy cop movie. But with director Pierre Morel at the helm (Taken (2009)), this could be so much more.
Will Pierre be able to breathe new life into the buddy cop movie – and reinvent Travolta as an action star just as he has Liam Neeson – or will this new film not have as much of an impact as Taken (2009)?
Guess we’ll find out in 2010.
