Gran Torino (2008)

Clint Eastwood tackles racial prejudices head-on in his new film Gran Torino. As a veteran who seems like he would have been a McCain supporter simply because McCain was white, Walt Kowalski doesn’t much like immigrants. The bitter old man seems a bit out of character for Eastwood, but we don’t have any doubts he’ll be able to pull it off as easily as the long-in-the-tooth cowboy of Unforgiven (1992).

With talk already of a possible Oscar® nod for Eastwood, Gran Torino looks to be worth checking out. Plus, a thought-provoking storyline about racial prejudices seems even more important today than it was even a few weeks ago. It is “United We Stand, Dived We Fall,” after all. We’ve recently made major inroads into tearing down some of those prejudices – but many are still alive and kicking, so it’s nice to see Eastwood doing his best to lend a hand.

And, if it is Eastwood’s last on-screen performance (as has been rumored), don’t you want to say you saw his final performance in front of the cameras on the big screen?

Besides, what was the last movie Eastwood both starred in and directed that you can remember not liking?
