Imagine That (2009)

Synopsis:

A financial executive (Murphy), desperately searching for a way to stop his career’s downward spiral, is invited into his daughter’s imaginative fantasy world, where he discovers the answers he’s been looking for.

Our Thoughts:

With Meet Dave (2008) now on DVD, we decided to look ahead at what Eddie Murphy was going to come out with next – and found Imagine That.

While Meet Dave (2008) turned out to be better than expected, it wasn’t exactly up there with Murphy’s best – and audiences didn’t exactly flock to it in theaters this past summer. Will the same fate await Imagine That?

So far, it appears that’s the way the film is headed. Teaming Eddie Murphy up with Nicole Ari Parker and Vanessa Williams is one thing- but why did they have to go and team Murphy up again with Ronny Cox? Just when the wounds from Beverly Hills Cop III are almost completely healed, along comes this Murphy/Cox team-up to remind us of that horror once again.

And what’s with the Alice In Wonderland rip-off? Sure, Murphy’s no Alice, but will the “Wonderland” he is brought into contain more Alice references, or will the scriptwriters deliver something truly original? So far, the movie sounds like it’s something we’ve seen already – so why would we waste time to go see it again?

Will major comedy stars be able to recover some of their summer 2008 losses in 2009? Eddie Murphy’s going to try with Imagine That. Unless the trailer really captures our attention, however, we’ll probably be sitting this one out – at least until it hits DVD.
