Julie & Julia (2009)

It seems Meryl Streep has re-introduced herself to audiences, and they are enjoying getting reacquainted with her. After her success last summer with the musical Mamma Mia! and her Oscar®-buzzing performance in Doubt, she steps back onto the screen as Julia Child in this summer’s Julie & Julia.

As the 6′ 2″ chef, this is definitely going to be more of Meryl Streep than viewers have seen before – but can she make Julia Child’s rather irritating voice palpable, or will audiences have to sit through an entire film of that irritating screech? True, some could say viewers already did that last summer when they sat through Meryl Streep’s singing in Mamma Mia! – but this time around it seems a bit more obvious. Will viewers put up with it again, or has Meryl Streep already overstayed her (re)welcome?

Amy Adams also shows up in Julie & Julia, and should be able to bring her likeable appeal with her. After viewers fell in love with her as the cartoon-princess-turned-real in Enchanted, they will easily stick around to see what she has to offer in this new film, and should bring in her own share of the audience.

Needless to say, my wife, the (pastry) cook-in-training, already has her heart set on seeing Julie & Julia when it hits theaters this summer. Will I be able to make it past the irritating Julia screech and accompany her, or is she destined to see this with her girlfriends (and without me) is still up in the air. I’ll hold off until seeing a preview to see how Streep does with the voice before I commit to this one.

If the voice is too bad, I may compromise by taking Heather to see Proposal (2009) instead.
