Plot: When comic book fanboy Dave Lizewski (Johnson) decides to take his obsession as inspiration to become a real-life superhero, there’s only one problem – he has no superpowers. Nonetheless, he forges on, and his life is forever changed as he inspires a subculture of copy cats, is hunted by assorted violent and unpleasant characters, and meets up with a pair of crazed vigilantes, including an 11-year-old sword-wielding dynamo, Hit Girl (Moretz) and her father, Big Daddy (Cage).

So, yesterday I was talking about the upcoming graphic novel adaptation, Losers (2010), and mentioned I figured it was probably a superhero spoof film, based on the title alone (it isn’t). Then today I go to check out what sounds like an action-packed graphic novel adaptation, Kick-Ass – and find out that this one is the comedy I thought was going to be. Funny how that works, isn’t it?

Okay, so I’m already not sure if this one’s going to work. It’s got a couple of points in it’s favor, of course – Nic Cage is decent, and Matthew Vaughn has done a decent job in the past (Stardust (2007)). But, since Nic can choose bad roles (Bangkok Dangerous (2008)), and Vaughn’s comedy in Stardust (2007) sometimes went past quirky and fell into forced comedy, those two could be a double-edged sword for Kick-Ass.

Based on some early Comic-Con® viewings, however, it looks like this film is walking that fine line between comedy and spoof, but still managing to make the film enjoyable for action fans. Will Kick-Ass turn out to be the first really good superhero comedy (like Hancock (2008) started out as, before veering off in another direction), or will this be just Superhero Movie with a bit of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) tossed in?

I’m waiting for a trailer before I decided to risk seeing this one in theaters.
