When I first heard about Land of the Lost, I was not too happy. Another Will Ferrell movie? Haven’t moviegoers suffered enough?

Still, I figured I’d read up on it anyway. A big summer movie for Will – so, it’s going to be marketed as a comedy (no matter if Will kills any actual laughs or not). Ok, and it’s based on that 70’s TV series? I didn’t watch that much, but from what I recall, that was pretty cheesy, wasn’t it?

Ok, so maybe the series could use an update now that Hollywood has heard of CGI – I’ll give you that. But will the other actors be able to overcome what most likely will be another of Ferrell’s laugh-deadening performances? Maybe…but only because of Anna Friel.

While I wasn’t too impressed with her in the Scary Movie series (a thought shared by most of the other critiqs out there), there were a lot more good reviews of her performance in The House Bunny than I ever expected. Since I haven’t yet seen that film, I don’t know whether I’ll be raving that big things are in store for Anna after seeing the movie or not (while most thought the movie wasn’t so great, almost everyone applauded her performance in it).

Land of the Lost will be Anna Farris’ true test, no matter what her performance in The House Bunny was. Will she be able to step into the Ferrell-created void of comedy and deliver some true laughs, or are viewers will be groaning as much about the new version as they are about the cheap graphics of the TV version?

With the disappointing box office performances of big-name comedians in Summer 2008 (Mike Myers, Adam Sandler, Eddie Murphy), it’s not looking so good. But then again, a possible standout performance by Farris and an update on the graphics may be able to keep Land of the Lost from becoming too lost amongst the other summer fare.
