Plot: American astronaut Charles “Chuck” Baker lands on Planet 51, thinking he’s the first person to step foot on the planet. Much to his surprise, he discovers that the planet is already inhabited by little green people who are happily living in a white picket fence world reminiscent of a cheerfully innocent 1950s America, and whose only fear is that it will be overrun by alien invaders…like Chuck!

When we sent to see Up (2009) in theaters 2 weeks ago, we saw a hilarious preview about an upcoming animated movie called Planet 51. I’d seen the preview a month or so ago, but had almost forgotten about the film until seeing the preview again in theaters.

Watching the calm aliens stare in horror at the rather silly-looking astronaut making his dramatic jumps to plant the American flag cracked me up all over again, and that scene continues to make me laugh each time I watch the trailer again. If that’s what in store for the rest of the film, I can’t wait for this one to arrive in theaters – and Thanksgiving seems like a long time to wait.

Then I checked out the voice cast, and once again, I was very impressed with the array of famous names attached to an animated picture. With Dwayne Johnson (who I still think of as The Rock) and Gary Oldman (who has continued to impress me since his memorable role in The Professional) among many others – including ex-Monty Python’er John Cleese – this seems like a dream voice cast for a film (all that’s missing is Will Smith, Al Pacino, and Samuel L. Jackson).

True, Planet 51 is going to have some stiff competition Thanksgiving weekend since Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009) opens the same day, but I’m thinking that’s probably a good thing, at least for me. While all the teenybopper gals are talking and chatting while ogling their latest boy toy Robert Pattinson, I’ll be able to enjoy watching Planet 51 in relative calm.

Of course, there’ll will probably be more misbehaving kids in Planet 51, but oh well. One can’t expect miracles.

Hopefully the film will be as hilarious as it’s preview, and keep us laughing hard enough to overlook such things.
