Jake Gyllenhaal’s much-buzzed about next role is finally slated for May of 2010, as he stars in the upcoming video game-based film Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
Since I never really got into the video games, I’m not sure what to expect from this one. At first glance, this seems to be just another video game remake, and one would at first assume it’s being directed by shlock director Uwe Boll, since that seems to be his specialty.
But, this film does have a few things going for it. Uwe Boll isn’t the director after all, it’s Mike Newell (Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire (2005)) so that’s a plus. It’s also produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the guy who brought us the Pirates Of The Caribbean: Curse Of The Black Pearl (2003) and it’s sequels, as well as 2009’s highest grossing film, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), among many others.
Also, Jake Gyllenhall has already shown he’s got the chops for action, since his role in Roland Emmerich disaster pic Day After Tomorrow (2004), and he’s also shown he’s got a real talent for acting from his breakout role in Donnie Darko (2001). Will he be able to take on the role of medieval prince with the same aplomb? I’m thinking so.
So, will Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time be able to rise above the crowd of video game adaptations and prove itself worth watching? Apparently, Disney thinks so, since it’s slated the film for a Summer 2010 release.
Let’s hope the rest of us agree.
