I’ve been a big fan of Sherlock Holmes the character since I was a kid. I used to devour any collection of Arthur Conan Doyle’s adventures of the detective and his faithful assistant Dr. Watson that I could find. I even went to 221B Baker Street (Holmes supposed residence) when I visited London in my early teens.
Over the years, however, I haven’t thought as much about the detective – although I do own a copy of Young Sherlock Holmes and watch House (the supposedly Sherlock Holmes-esque medical drama).
Recently, however, I discovered that not one but two Sherlock Holmes films are in the works. While I haven’t heard much about the Sacha Baron Cohen/Will Farrell vehicle (in fact, I can’t even imagine that pairing), I recently caught the trailer for Sherlock Holmes, starring Robert Downey Jr. as the intrepid detective and Jude Law as his co-hort Watson.
From what I can tell from the trailer, Downey Jr. looks to have hit on a new version of Holmes- minus his trademark hat – and looks like he might just be worth seeing all by himself. It’s nice to see that his career, which had been flagging previous to Iron Man (2008), is still hot, and I’m looking forward to many more appearances from him in the future.
But, wait, is that a skinny Watson I see? What happened to get Guy Ritchie to cast Jude Law as the normally portly fellow? Is this new Watson pals with Subway’s® Jared, or has he just found Slim-Fast®? And will Jude – who’s best role to date was in the largely overlooked A.I. – be able to pull off the new slim Watson?
Here’s hoping Santa is delivering us a movie we’re going to enjoy instead of the film equivalent of a lump of coal. Guess we’ll find out for ourselves, since we’ve pretty much already decided to see this one on Christmas Day.
