With the summer movie season very nearly upon us (this Friday!), we take a look at what looks to be the biggest hits of this year’s Summer At The Movies. We are picking one movie a week, and, if things go as planned, we should be posting a review of each as they arrive. First up – May!

With the summer movie season very nearly upon us (this Friday!), we take a look at what looks to be the biggest hits of this year’s Summer At The Movies. We are picking one movie a week, and, if things go as planned, we should be posting a review of each as they arrive.

Thought the X-Men were a distant movie memory after X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)? Not hardly. The character that made Hugh Jackman famous is back for his very own movie, and he’s clawing his way into theaters May 01. Sure, an early version leaked online, but who isn’t going to see X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) on the big screen anyway?

With a general feeling of “this is not your father’s Star Trek,” JJ Abrams is all set to release his most anticipated film yet. With a reboot that (so far) is appealing to Trekkies and non-Trekkies alike, this could be just what’s needed to revive the franchise. We’ll find out when Star Trek (2009) beams into theaters on May 08.

Even though we weren’t a big fan of Da Vinci Code (2006), we’re eagerly awaiting this Dan Brown-penned prequel-turned-sequel. While Tom Hanks still isn’t our first choice to play Robert Langdon, it’s unlikely even he will be able to destroy the fantastic storyline this time around – and Ewan McGregor is there to boost our hopes as well. Angels & Demons (2009) reveals itself in theaters on May 15.

It’s odd to be talking about a Terminator film sans Schwarzenegger, but Christian Bale looks like a worthy man to take the helm of this latest chapter. Set in the apocalyptic future the previous movies were all centered on avoiding, this one looks to be the ultimate battle of man vs. machine. Who wins? Hopefully the viewers. Terminator Salvation (2009) swarms into theaters on May 22.

If it’s summer, a Pixar movie is a sure thing. That’s the track record they’ve set with films like Monsters, Inc. (2001), Finding Nemo (2003) and last year’s brilliant WALL-E (2008). Will a fantastical story about a cantankerous old man, a boy scout and a flying house keep their success going? Things are definitely looking Up (2009) when this one soars into theaters May 28.

Also in May: Battle For Terra (2009), Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009), Next Day Air (2009), Dance Flick (2009), Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009), Brothers Bloom (2009) and Drag Me To Hell (2009).
