An uneven May kicked off our Summer At The Movies – 2008 Edition: we loved Iron Man (2008), hated Speed Racer (2008) and were only ho-hum about Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008) and Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull (2008).
Now, as we head into June, we look ahead to see what July has in store for us.
July
Will Smith’s take on the superhero genre in what looks to be this year’s biggest non-animated comedy. Blockbuster summer movies are Smith’s forte, and this film about a down-on-his-luck superhero looks to be aiming to be one of his biggest hits yet, considering even it’s latest preview is laugh-out-loud funny. Hancock (2008) takes to the sky on July 2nd – and every indication points to Will Smith once again ruling the 4th of July weekend.
After much acclaimed smaller films like Pan’s Labyrinth and The Orphanage, director Guillermo del Toro is bringing our favorite demon back to the big screen this summer. From the looks of this sequel, there’s going to be plenty of action and some more rapier wit from ol’ horn-head. Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) swarms into theaters July 11th.
After the highly successful re-invention of the Batman series with Batman Begins (2005), director Christopher Nolan gets Christian Bale to suit up once more for this eagerly-anticipated sequel. Whether audiences will be flocking to see Christian Bale & Co. or flocking to see Heath Ledger in one of his last performances, you can bet there will be long lines for Dark Knight (2008) when it spreads it’s wings July 18th.
FBI Special Agents Mulder and Scully return to the big screen in the sequel us X-Philes have been waiting for. While this may not be the monster hit of the summer, teaming creator Chris Carter once again with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson can’t be a bad thing – and it’s a dream come true for fans of the highly popular series. This one should have fans new and old chanting “The Truth Is Out There” when X-Files: I Want To Believe (2008) lands in theaters on July 25th.
Also in July: Journey To The Center Of The Earth (2008), Meet Dave (2008), Space Chimps (2008) and Step Brothers (2008).
