The Princess and the Frog (2009)

Just when you thought Disney had completely converted to CGI animation (a la Pixar), they turn back the page and deliver a new hand-drawn animated film, The Princess And The Frog, set to hit theaters in December.

While the previews look a bit too kid-friendly for my taste, I’m glad to see that Disney is going (literally) back to the drawing board for this one. Their efforts at CGI, while entertaining, pale in comparison to Pixar’s masterpieces, and it just has seemed silly for Disney to keep trying to compete with itself (since they now own Pixar). They are at least contemplating the ridiculousness of the idea, as they are now going back to what they are known for – namely, hand-drawn animation.

Redesigning classic fairy tales has always been their thing as well, so The Princess And The Frog marks another return back to basics for them, as they try to update the whole “Frog Prince” fable.

True, they’ve updated it a bit (racially diverse animated cast set in New Orleans), but hopefully their updates will help make this another fairy tale they can make their own.

Let’s hope, for Disney’s sake, that The Princess And The Frog will turn out to be another animated classic – and not a pathetic attempt to recapture their glory days.
