Plot: When high-powered book editor Margaret (Bullock) faces deportation to her native Canada, she persuades her put-upon assistant Andrew (Reynolds) to take part in an engagement charade. With an impromptu wedding in the works and an immigration official on their tails, Margaret and Andrew reluctantly vow to stick to the plan despite the precarious consequences.

Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds team up for a chick flick heading to theaters this summer named The Proposal.

While Ryan Reynolds started off with guy-friendly films like National Lampoon’s Van Wilder and Blade: Trinity (2004), he seems to have since become pigeonholed into chick flicks. Most likely, his comedic timing helps him there as well, but it’s still disappointing seeing him turn up in chick flick after chick flick with nary a guy flick in sight (thankfully, he branches out a little this summer, popping up in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)).

Sandra Bullock has gone the same route, after her start in guy-friendly Speed. Some of them, like While You Were Sleeping managed to be decent couple films, but most of them guys have tended to avoid.

With The Proposal, it’s a toss-up. While it does look like it has chick flick elements in it, there doesn’t seem to be too much male-bashing, so guys may be able to put up with it. With Reynolds providing the comedy and Bullock hopefully reverting to her While You Were Sleeping persona, this may turn out to be THE couple flick of the summer.

Still, I’ll probably wait for this one to hit DVD – unless Heather manages to convince me to see it in theaters.
