Apparently, Mel Gibson isn’t the only actor who’s planning to put in a reappearance in 2010 – so is Jackie Chan when he stars in The Spy Next Door, which, coincidentally, happens to open the same day as Mel’s new film, Edge of Darkness (2010).
But, that’s where the similarities between these two films end. While Mel’s Edge of Darkness (2010). looks to be a thriller/drama, Jackie Chan is following the route many of his action star co-horts have followed, including Vin Diesel and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson – by starring in a comedy that involves kids. Diesel had his Pacifier, The Rock had his Game Plan – and Jackie Chan has The Spy Next Door.
This one seems awfully similar to Diesel’s kid flick, with Chan the babysitter fighting off bad guys attempting to capture the kiddies in his charge. True, Chan’s more comic-prone than Diesel by a long shot, but that’s not all that Chan has to contend with in this pic.
He’s also got Billy Ray Cyrus. Yup, the guy whose ultimate goal in life now consists of living off his daughter’s fame and fortune is a co-star in the upcoming The Spy Next Door. Yikes. Can even Chan handle the double whammy of the kid flick and Billy Ray?
Unless Billy Ray’s the bad guy, and we get to see Chan beat him senseless a time or two, this one’s already relegated to nothing but a possible DVD rental in the future. After all, no matter how funny Chan has been in the past (even managing to make Jennifer Love Hewitt look good in 28 Days Later (2003)), putting him in a pal-like situation with the annoying Billy Ray is going to be just downright awful, no matter how they try to spice it up.
