Plot: Michael Harding (Badgley) returns home from military school to find his mother (Ward) happily in love and living with her new boyfriend, David (Walsh). As the two men get to know each other, Michael becomes more and more suspicious of the man who is always there with a helpful hand. Is he really the man of his mom’s dreams or could David be hiding a dark side?

Having never seen the original horror flick back in the 80’s, I wasn’t very excited when I heard that The Stepfather was making it’s way into theaters this October.

With a largely unrecognizable cast, it’s not really doing any great things for me even after seeing the preview. Sure, the whole evil stepmother thing has been done to death, but is having an evil stepfather really that different? Sure, he’s usually more brutish, but it’s easier for the male kid to fight back, right? Especially a kid just out of military school, like the kid in this flick.

So why make the movie at all, much less remake it?

I don’t know…and so far, The Stepfather hasn’t given me any good reason to want to find out. It sounds like some other movie company wants a bit of the October horror crowd (after all, Saw VI (2009) probably isn’t going to be the most popular film in that flagging series), so figured on kicking out something inexpensive and scary – and ended up with this.

While this may garner spill-off from Saw VI (2009), unless this film gets really good word of mouth, chances are The Stepfather won’t even be a flash in the pan this October.

Needless to say, we won’t be spending our hard-earned cash on this one.
