The Writer’s Strike Claims A Victim

While the continuing writer’s strike has caused a lot of Hollywood hair-pulling, Average Joe has barely been affected by it so far…until now.

While the continuing writer’s strike has caused a lot of Hollywood hair-pulling, the common joe (like myself) has barely been affected by it so far…until now.

Sure, the Golden Globe Winners 2008 were announced without the usual glamour and party atmosphere that usually accompanies them and were instead just spouted out in a hour-long “Access Hollywood”-style show (thus demeaning these awards even further), but does that really affect us on a day to day basis? No, not really.

Wait…before I go on…anyone got a reason why the WGA boycotted the Golden Globes this year, thus demeaning them to this hour-long list? It doesn’t make sense to me. The WGA is protesting unfair wages, so won’t let their own members accept awards for something they did pre-strike? Um…that sounds like it hurts the members who wrote films like, say, Atonement (Best Picture of the Year). Doesn’t it, or am I missing the whole reasoning behind the boycott here?

Anyway, to continue…

So, sure, a couple of movies have gotten bumped a little bit (a few weeks at most, usually), but that’s about it. It seemed like that was a good thing, as if the strike continued, Hollywood may shed some of their more bad projects, and the cream would rise to the top, so to speak.

Then their were the late night guys (of which I watch the Stewart/Colbert line-up), and everyone was worried late night would be off for the duration. Then, whether they had struck deals (Letterman) or not (everybody else), they came back…and they aren’t half bad. Not much of a change, really (in fact, I think Colbert has gotten funnier).

So far, so good, right?

But now…now they’ve gone too far. They’ve struck at my very core with this latest bit of news (ok, not that bad, but still…): Jack Bauer has become the strike’s latest victim.

According to sources around the web, the 7th season of “24″, originally due to start last Monday, has been postponed indefinitely to “avoid interruption” of the coming season.

Not only that, Fox bumped up it’s mind-numbing “American Idol” season premiere to help fill in the gap.

While some people out there may be big fans of the recent “Reality” television surge, I personally can’t stand it. I never liked “Survivor”, “American Idol” makes me ill, and don’t even get me started on the knock-off crappy singing shows. Even “American Gladiators” has recently come back, dumbed down enough to be hosted by “I prove wrestling is fake every time I try it” Hulk Hogan.

Sorry…back to my topic…

Every year, I know, even while experiencing the doldrums that follow the excitement of the Christmas holidays, that I have the new season of “24″ to look forward to the middle of January. This year, I don’t get anything but a preview (see below), which does nothing to help the melancholy that’s set in over having to wait even longer for Jack & Co.

Sadly, Jack Bauer may not be the last victim of this strike – if this keeps up, all we’ll have is craptastic reality television all season long. I don’t think I can handle that nightmare, so please, Fox and WGA, come to a deal and let Jack and friends save the world again – not to mention our hopes for a decent 2008, televsion-wise.
