Back when I was a kid, “V: The Series” made a big impression on me. I can remember staying up late to watch that first 2-hour long episode back in ‘83, and getting freaked out by the bizarre alien visitors (to this day, that’s the only “horror” film to ever give me nightmares).
After that premiere episode, I never noticed (maybe due to a conscious decision by my parents) it continued on to become a full-fledged – albeit brief – series. Years later, I re-discovered it on VHS (and then DVD), and was shocked at how hokey it now seemed.
So when I heard a remake of the series was heading to ABC fall 2009, I couldn’t wait. With the updated graphics (and hopefully a more twisting storyline), this could be THE television show remake I’ve been waiting over 2 decades for.
And then the delays were announced. “V” was still airing in the fall, but it wouldn’t start until November, then to go on hiatus for a couple of months before returning with fresh episodes around March of 2010 (prompting talk of the November episodes amounting to a “mini-series” before the actual series starts in March). While this hiatus may put some viewers off after catching the first shows, it will be a good chance to gauge how interesting the show actually is – a decision to mull over in the coming months, rather than worrying about making a snap decision now and missing out on what the series may hold.
Will this be able to update that fateful episode I remember as a kid and deliver it with a stronger punch than those hokey effects from the original, or will ABC find that this alien attack loses too much steam during it’s hiatus?
While that remains to be seen, one thing’s for certain – there’s no way I’m going to miss this one.
