a critiQal film review Men in Black II (2002)

Plot: Jay (Smith) and Kay (Jones) are back, protecting the earth from the scum of the universe. It's four years later, and Kay has become a civilian again (working in a post office), with no memory of his Men In Black exploits. Jay, meanwhile, is a top Men In Black agent now, and uncovers a diabolical plot led by Serleena (Boyle). Jay finds that only Kay has the information to save the world, and goes to bring him back in. Now Jay must convince Kay that aliens do exist, again, and bring him back into the Men In Black.

The Men In Black are back! After seeing the original Men in Black (1997), I was very interested in seeing how a sequel would turn out. Would they be able to continue with the quirky sci-fi comedy of the original, or would it flop?

All of the characters you love are back in Men In Black II. Everyone from Jay, Kay and Zed (Torn) to Frank and Jeebs (Shaloub) are in the sequel, and each has changed a bit since you last saw them. Jay is a little more experienced but still hasn’t lost the fun-loving attitude. Kay is still the best of the best, but seems to have mellowed a little bit, which was needed. Frank is still the wise-cracking alien dog, but has moved up within the Men In Black from the informant of the first movie to a partner, albeit for a short time, of Jay. The worms are back as well, and have a bit more of a role in this one. The characters are all very believable, and get you more involved in the movie. A nice feat, considering the unbelievable things they do.

Men In Black II is a good continuation from the original, keeping all the characters true to the original. It was disappointing not to see Dr. Laura Weaver – the morgue doc from the original (Linda Fiorentino), but that was the only major character from the first movie that was missing.

It was also nice seeing the role reversal of Jay showing Kay the world of the Men In Black. The bad guy, er gal, was evil and showed a definite threat to the Men In Black. And the jokes kept coming. From Frank singing in the car with his head out the window, to Jay commenting on “busted hotness,” the laughs were there, although maybe a little more forced than in the original.

The special effects were, well, out of this world in Men In Black II. Most of the aliens were very well done, and believable, especially Serleena. Some of the cameo aliens were a bit cheesy, though (the bird people from MIB headquarters for one – basically just a couple people with beaks – c’mon!). Those were small parts though, and didn’t detract much from the movie.

All in all, Men In Black II is a great continuation of the MIB story. With the return of Jay and Kay in the starrring roles, the good plot, and the expansion of some minor characters from the original, this was one of those sequels that came close to the original.

Even though the original was better, this is one of the better sequels I’ve seen in a while, even outdoing Blade II (2002).

Go see it, before everyone else beats you to it. Just watch out for de-neuralizers, because you are going to want to remember this one.
